Appenzeller Chapel, located in rural Northwestern New Jersey, is a Methodist summer day camp and year-round Retreat Center. The site consists of a collection of buildings including a dining hall, main office, and dormitories. In 1994 the ministry defined a masterplan for the site and its uses. The goals set out included the renovation of the dining hall and the creation of a new chapel and meeting hall.
The resulting small chapel and meeting hall minimized the impact to the site and was able to fit within a limited budget. As the building serves as both the summer camp and the retreat center, a dialogue was created between a house of worship and a meeting hall with flexible space to allow for multiple configurations depending on the desired use.
